Whether you call them Wimpies or Sloppy Joes, these sandwiches are one of the things that can instantly take me back to my childhood. My mother has always made the BEST wimpies ever! These are no sauce-from-a-can wimpies. They are the real McCoy. Made with love…from scratch.
When I asked her about the recipe, she told me it was actually my grandmother’s! And, considering she’s 92…this recipe goes waaay back!
1 pound ground beef
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 onion, chopped
3/4 cup ketchup
1 tsp celery seed
2 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp vinegar
2 tsp sugar
Brown beef with onions and peppers in a large skillet. Drain well and return to skillet. Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 15 minutes. Serve on your favorite sandwich roll.
Is it a Keeper?
Four generations of my family have enjoyed these sandwiches through the years! My mom would make them for a fast supper and for parties. They’re also great reheated for lunch the next day! Whenever I make these, I usually make a double batch. They are especially great with homemade bread and butter pickles and tater tots! Or, maybe try them with Sweet Potato Fries!
I hope you enjoy them as much as my family has through the years!
